Music video director
My chosen director is called Jonathan Glazer. Since the mid-1990s he has directed a number of music videos, and was named MTV Director of the Year 1997. But he didn’t always start as a music video director he went though stages of his life in different fields of education, such as he started at Nottingham Trent University studying theatre design. After that he moved onto making television trailers, which he got a award from the BBC for. Then he moved onto his music videos where he has dabbled with the strange and unusual. When i say this a particular video comes to mind 'UNKLE - rabbit in your headlights'. After watching this piece of his work i was drawn in with interest and the wondering of what else he had done. The reason for this is because the music video really made me think it seems, to me at least, that the tunnel represents the man's journey through life. He's constantly being hurt and ignored. When he finally stops going along with the traffic, he breaks free from the tyranny of the majority, and he smiles for the first time. , i believe the moral 'when you get knocked down, you should get back up' comes into the picture. The video is about a man getting thrown to the fall by getting hit by cars, yet he keeps getting up, until he stands up and stands still letting a car hit into the back of him. These I think signifies a different moral 'stand up and face you enemy'.The hardest part of analysing a music video would be finding out the target audience, lucky this target audience isn't to hard to decipher. I think Jonathan Glazer has a bit of a crazy and imaginative mind, and that is the type of person his sort of video are aimed at. The reason for me thinking this is because of all the abstract and imaginative clips and hidden messages inside his work. After looking over his videos over and over i wanted to know what other people have to say about them. So i went on youtube and he his dedicated website to see what people had commented. What i found out was a lot of positive messages such as 'Crazy screaming dude rocks!! Wicked track and sweet video!, Great vid, love John Glazer's work, i like the Jacobs Ladder bit too. Finally i looked over a few different music videos he had done to see the similarities and differs. All of his videos have something strange about them. Such as the Jamiroquai track (Virtual Insanity), which has jamiroquai dancing on a moving floor, like a huge treadmill.Lastly Jonathan Glazer is now currently working on a film adaptation of Michel Faber's darkly comic science fiction novel "Under the Skin", slated for release in 2011. Which i believe will be representing his style and craziness you see in his music videos.
